WONDRE at the 24th European Conference on Literacy

Our colleague Karolína Šimková participated in the 24th European Conference on Literacy at the University of Ljubljana, Slovenia.

From July 6th to 8th, the University of Ljubljana hosted the 24th European Conference on Literacy. Our colleague Karolína Šimková presented a collaborative paper co-authored with our PI, Anežka Kuzmičová, titled “The Next Page Would Tell You How Not to Harm Them”: Nonfiction as a Source of Empathy and Wonder.

Traditionally, nonfiction is seen as connected to formal learning and thus considered an obligation more than a source of pleasure. In her presentation, Karolína challenged this view with a study that analysed two contemporary animal-themed picturebooks through the lens of qualitative data from creative interviews with children.

The findings reveal that for these young readers, engagement is driven not just by information seeking, but by specific affective stances: empathy regarding animal wellbeing and a desire for wonder at surprising facts.
