Playing research with lemons: Workshop day in Olomouc

Children helped improve our research design and tried out different facets of social science during our workshop day at International Montessori School Olomouc.

What can lemons teach children about the social sciences? This was one of several creative exercises children tried during a workshop day at the International Montessori School Olomouc organised by team members Markéta Supa, Magdaléna Gorčíková and Patricie Kyslíková.

The workshop was part of preparations for our upcoming research exploring how children experience their interests, how they come to know the world through them, what they imagine, and how reading plays into all this. The children also tried out our research design hands-on and we are now making final tweaks based on their feedback.

Other activities included a metaphorical exercise using lemons as objects of study and the design of pretend research grant applications. The children reflected on their own interests, learned what it means to do research, and saw how their own curiosity can become the starting point of a research project.

Many thanks to International Montessori School Olomouc for supporting this workshop, we learned a lot from the children!
