Terry Klaban presented at international symposium in Wrocław, Poland

Terry Klaban presented their research on book designs fuelling the vast export of Czech nonfiction at the 4th International Symposium and Workshops for Early Career Researchers in Children’s Literature.
In March, our doctoral student Terry Klaban had the opportunity to present their research at the 4th International Symposium and Workshops for Early Career Researchers in Children’s Literature, hosted by the University of Wrocław, Poland. The symposium is an annual venue for emerging researchers within two years of completing their PhD to present original projects developed during Master’s or doctoral studies.
Terry’s contribution, The Efferent–Aesthetic as a Gradient Scale in Analysing a Children’s Nonfiction Portfolio, was among those specially selected for oral presentation. It focused on content analyses of children’s nonfiction produced by Albatros – the largest publishing house in Czechia and a key exporter of original books to international markets.
Terry examined how different nonfiction books convey information to young readers. Two primary strategies emerged: traditional, text-based formats following encyclopedic structures, and visually-driven designs that rely on illustrations and layout to engage and inform. Using the efferent–aesthetic distinction, Terry mapped how these styles fare differently across the world.
